The Doc who fell to earth?

Our Sheikh doc has touched down.So finally, the truth is out.
According to BBC, he is a space tourist.
Nice to have an out of this world, paid for vacation.
Somehow, only an orthopod can pull this off..
Maybe he should have stayed longer till his 'gasing' stopped spinning. What a test about microgravity that was.

Let's see whether Malaysian Government is going to sue them for slander.

Been a while

Been a busy month..relocation is a tough thing to do but it had to be done. Now it's done and so many thing happened in the meantime.
On a positive note, Hui Yee had her heart transplant. Not once but twice. On a cautious note, she is still not out of the woods and TunM is improving.
Another equivocal (to me) news is the space bound Doc is now in space...Good for him but is it for the rest of us remains to be seen.
Definitely in bad news category are:
1. Nurin's killer(s) are still at large.
2. ACA is going for whistleblower in Lingamgate
3. Nazri the lawyer had a foot in mouth disease (again). Did they lower the passing mark for him?
4. Datuk Zakaria Deros shamelessly flaunts his DEFINITELY ill gotten wealth, while ACA chased the innocent.
5. Altantuya's murder is going nowhere and people now go "Altan-who?"
6. Nori had a baby with KJ, now she can't get rid of that leech.

Drat, I better go and find more good news. This is making me depressed.

Al Fatihah to Nurin

As a father, I can undestand and I share the pain that the parents must be feeling now. I can even comprehend the state of denial they are in..In fact, I would too. Please God, protect all the little children.
I'm sad at the loss of freedom for my own kids..I would dare not now let them do those little things that make them happy..Going out to buy ice lollies at the neighbourhood shop or cycle her glasses off in a 'speeding' frenzy..
I'm sad that a girl can be taken right under everybody's nose without anybody noticing or have we all stopped caring for other?

As for the perpetrator,I hope this tupai fall to the ground soon..

'What's up doc' week!!

It has been an interesting week for 'medicine' in Malaysia for the past few days, with the Hon. Health Minister 'firmly' at the helm.
First, the stem cell fiasco. It is amazing that this modern day snake oil peddling company can operate under the radar for so long.I have ranted about the dubiousness of this practice since May/June 2007 when I came across the 'disappointed' patients in my practice.
As usual, I expect there is more to it than meets the eye. Would not be surprised if there are some big shot politicians behind them. After all this was in the news some time back. Careful with reading that article, it's a mix of truth and lies. The top half is crap.

Second, I'm surprised that everybody's surprised that the specialist was on call by phone. That has been the practice when Hon Minister was in hospital setup and that's how it's going to be until next millennium unless, the is a law to the contrary.
Come to think of it, the law actually is in existence. One can't claim the allowance for active call unless one is on site.To do otherwise is fraudulent and can be charged as making a false claim.

OK, ACA please drop all current investigations into Datuk Zeq, Azim Zabidi,Faizal, Samy Vellu and Taib Mahmud and proceed with this more important 'breach of trust'.

Now, my pet peeve. The National Specialist Register.
The intention is noble and to that intent I support it BUT as in other countries, the onus to maintain that register lies with the Government. Academy of Medicine is not the Government, and somehow with the sleight of hand of Dr. Ismail Merican, the Academy is suddenly empowered to do so.

So far, not bad. What the heck you say, as long as someone or somebody maintains the list it's ok.
NOT ok. Academy is charging everybody who's not a member RM300 per year and RM200 if you are, just to have your name in that list.

I can understand the initial payment since someone might need to be paid to go through my qualifications and training but to pay for life? Does that mean I am a certified&gazetted specialist this year but maybe not next year huh?

I get all riled up again when the purpose of paying for life, is that for all the 'jerks' on the councils ( there are many!!) can be PAID whenever they have their meetings..what a load of steatorrhic crap, Dr. Ismail.

Law and enforcement

There are plenty of laws in Malaysia. About anything. From littering to how to bury your dead.Laws about things from cradle to grave.
Enforcement of those laws are a different thing altogether.

I'm quite amazed and sad, reading about the worst vehicular accident in Malaysia ever, yesterday.
Sad about the loss of lives, loss of parents, son and daughters.Amazed about the futility of having laws designed to prevent these kind of things from happening, are not enforced.

Numerous summonses on the driver and the bus itself, the red flags of Puspakom failures etc. What happened to all the effort, time and money spent putting all these into existence if we don't want to do anything about it..

Maybe this is where I can say corruption kills.

Speaking of corruption, mother of all corruptions, seems to be playing out in front of us with just tiny squeaks in mainstream papers.

Widening Gap

Flew back home from KLIA last night. Lots of flight delay noted. Some a couple of hours and some lucky ones, about half hour or so.But, delay seemed like the norm and in fact, expected, among all MAS flight yesterday.
Whatever the reasons are, an article in Malaysia Today, is too much to ignore. Heard that even ZAM was delayed.Too bad he's not important enough to have his own jet.

The big thing last week was the blitz against well known blogger Raja Petra aka Malaysia Today's owner. The fallout from that fiasco is quite interesting too.

The rich thing about that police report is not the report but the person who made the report..that guy has lots of skeleton in his closet.

I hope with this police report, we get to know more of his dirty secrets so that his political ambition can be buried for good.If not, some people who are impressed with his 'prestation' might just vote him again.

Spider web

A few things happened since my last entry. An aging chopper probably crashed in the middle of thick jungle of Pahang ( we still have thick jungle, thankfully). It is amazing looking at the bravery of our Air Force guys and gals. It's not the fighting quality that amazed me but their willingness to board a 40 year old flying machine, in doubtful airworthiness, when i shiver each time i board a relatively new commercial plane.
Reminded me of a long time ago when I was in college, a friend of a friend worked at a RMAF base as a technician and he casually told me how 'easy' his job was.Basically it was just eyeballing all the wires etc and just put a tick when he's done. The shocker is that, he'd put a tick even when he can't be bothered to check too...The way it sounded was, that would be more often than not..I'm sure it's the same pervasive mentality everywhere.

Including on the football pitch. That's why we deserve what we get..I can't even name a single player from national team now, a far cry from the days I went to the stadium with my dad and had to sit on the pitch itself because the stadium was full, to watch Soh Chin Aun,Santokh Singh etc playing for Selangor against Kelantan, in Kota Bharu.

Then we have the on-going Altantuya murder trial, the Johari Triad link, the IGP Triad link and the arrest of Nathaniel Tan.

Just think about it..they are all related. The common factor I believe is the degradation or dumbing down of the society, affecting all facets of life..Everybody wanted an easy life and a shortcut to glory.

Fottballers wanted easy cash for playing with clubs, no glory and pride to play for country.
RMAF technicians doesn't (didn't) know what responsibility means.
Altantuya was murdered for money by people who wanted to keep all the money and to be able to make more money.
The Triad, of course wanted money by whatever means possible and Nat Tan was somehow linked in the (gomen?) attempt to cover up the issue..I think

Mankind is going down the drain...

BTW, don't ever give your old SIM card to friends or relatives, you'll never know where it would end up and you be arrested in some foreign country like that poor doctor in Autralia.
Drat, I gave mine last year to a friend in Saudi..hope he's a 'good' guy.

Religious Supremacist?

What's happening to our country huh? There has been a couple of disturbing incidences.
The Revathi fiasco has made Malaysia into world chart. It's one of the top emailed news on BBC.
Then there is JAIP trying to outdo or outIslam MAIK or their likes. You can read the actual news in The Star.I'd say it's time to ban sending 'religous students' from going to 'learn' in Pakistan,India or the likes. They end up reversing time, a few hundred years at one go.
Maybe one day we have the notorious glamour at being screened and suspected like those bunch of doctors in Scotland and Australia.

Deja Vu..

Weird. It's been only a few days ago I saw 'V for Vendetta' on TV.I really dig that movie, in fact I saw it twice the last time it was shown at the cinema.
Then we have a new Prime Minister for UK, a Labour one, during the time that support for Labour Party is declining, support for 'war on terror' is declining then wham bang, we have two car bombs (that luckily, were defused before they exploded) and then a flaming SUV rammed Glasgow Airport.
Then you have the usual 'we are facing threat and united we must... yada, yada speech'.

All these reminded me of the virus attack in 'V'. And Brown is beginning to look like Sutler, Bush looked like him (Sutler) a long time ago and the Government starts to become 'Norsefire'.

I hope there is a good inspector somewhere in this plot.

Here we go again..

Hardly a week can go by without some silly medical misadventure happening. This retained ureteric stent fiasco reflects the usual my story, your story and the truth scenario.
I find it quite ridiculous that a patient, agreeing to go for surgery without knowing what is going to be done onto her own body, but having said that I'm not that surprised.
In my own practice, it's not unusual to see someone who say they don't understand or know what operation they had in the past.Especially in public hospital setup with overworked doctors and nurses.

The other side of the coin is the surgeon who would ask the most junior doctor to shove the consent form in front of the patient for signature.

The truth is probably a mixture of both.

All these, made worse by stupid sensational reporting from a 'mainstream' newspaper masquerading as a supermarket tabloid.

Writer's block

Funny. I always had something to say. All the time. Even when nobody wants me to say anything.
Log in today and I realised that I have nothing to say.

Not even about Altantuya, nor the selling of MU, the abuse of Indonesian maids (without them, I can't live), the dirty PLKN canteen nor about Real Madrid winning La Liga on Beckham's last season ( no, I'm not a ManU man, in fact I'm an ABU man).
I can't even think of anything to write about the flood in KL nor about the SMART tunnel.Poor chap who manages SMART tunnel, even though he said that the tunnel is not ready yet, still he was given brickbats!! C'mon guys be reasonable..

Then I remember the Raja Petra's ominous warning.Hope that I don't have anything to write about, tomorrow.

Down and out..

Terrible day yesterday..In fact any day like that is terrible. One of my close friend passed away suddenly, probably due to a heart attack the night before. He was one week away from 40 years old..This is the time when you think life is not fair..with 3 young daughters and when life is just about to take shape. He was not a smoker, played soccer for school etc. In fact he had chest pain after playing badminton and still he managed to joke that he'd had it if it was a heart attack.Unfortunately it was.
Arrived DOA in a local hospital.

And for the whole day yesterday, I had that vague chest and epigastric discomfort.

Hugged all my kids last night. At least I can still do that.

Cuti Cuti Malaysia

Didn't get much time to blog over last week or so. Promised my kids to take them to the National Zoo, which I haven't been to myself for the past 30 years. Guess what, nothing has changed!!! I think Taiping Zoo is so much better..
Anyway, I don't know things about fundings etc. I'm sure it's costly to run a zoo. Somehow I can't find that spark or oomph in our National Zoo, to make it a really memorable visit.
Maybe it is a memorable visit for my kids, I'll ask them..At least they can write about it in their
essay, which I'm sure they'll be asked to do after the holidays.

Well, another medical fiasco this week. 4 different hospitals private and public, turned away ( or tried to), a patient with gunshot wound. I think our ethics have gone to the dogs..(apologies to all the dogs). Whatever happened to the desire to treat the sick, god..
At least DG made sense this time in ticking them off..Anyway, as usual, there could be more to it than meets the eye.

Travelling during school holidays can be challenging in many ways. You have to cope with the constant in-car yelling, jumping and crying. Not to mention the I want to go to the toilet routine..That is ok, what I really get pissed about is the ignoramus on wheels. Somehow, someone forgot to teach some drivers some etiquette.
By the way, I think we need a sort of 'slow' trap too on the road to complement the 'speed' traps.I think countless accidents are caused by really slow drivers, driving at 40 km/h with vast expanse of empty road right down to the horizon.

Anyway got home safely, and a home is a home even though the gate is rusty, grass is growing wild and the paint job is 'fungus green'.

Black sheep

I saw the report in The Star about the death of a poor lady who had an accident while fleeing KJ's henchmen aka Mat Rempits, or was it just a few hoodlums who happen to ride bikes..

Whilst her death was a tragedy and can even be criminal in nature, the aftermath, in a blame game, dragged some doctors and/or hospital through mud. It became a he says, she says kind of thing until it has to be investigated.

Read it here.

As it turned out the hospital/doctors there did the right thing but it was too late..the wolves were let out and it can be seen that some of them are doctors too.

Talk about " I have seen the enemy, he is us" kind of moment.

Instead of looking at the big picture, some poor doctors ( I presumed government's) would start laying into their private counterpart and start painting every hospital and doctors with the same broad brush of greed.I suppose they just stopped short of calling them greedy capitalist pig..

Before all the Dr. Guavarras and Castros started to complain about the evil thing called money and how we should just live on goodwill, I will explain a thing or two.

There are 2 main parts in a private hospital bills, one is the professional fees where we get paid for work that we actually perform. (Some doctors would probably consider saying "Hi, how are you" as work e.g. neurologists maybe, in checking speech and higher mentation, but I don't).

Second is the hospital bills ie disposable items, drugs, services from nurses, physiotherapy (like what Datuk Kalimullah had during NSTP's AGM), Xrays etc. There are actually costs involved in buying these things to be provided to patients..If you guys didn't mugged so hard in medical schools to get the CGPA of 4.0, you might realise that costs need money aka dough, fulus or duit.

So, pray tell our 'poor doctors', who is going to cover these costs? It is not free in the governments' hospital either. You and me paid for that via our yearly tax..which is quite likely that I paid more than you do..If you say waive it then, in no time private hospitals will be as profitable as Proton and we can sit tight for Naza to come and buys us for RM1.

Only in the case of private hospitals it will be Temasek Group via Pantai, or maybe KPJ..

I have done often in the past, did it today and I'm sure I'll do it again in the future, in waiving my professional fees if the situation warrants it. I doubt I'll do it for Mr Ananda Krishnan should our path cross (he ain't giving me free Astro and Maxis too) but I will do that for you since we are within the same brotherhood. So I don't need you badmouthing me, like I need a proverbial hole in the head!

Next time you guys hear stories about greedy doctors and hospitals.Don't jump on the bandwagon, sit back and figure out the truth because I said way up there. There's always a gap between your story, mine and the truth.

How does one force faith?

Was up to my nose with work yesterday. Came in at 5.30 am and went home at 8.30pm.Had to come in again at 10pm to 11.30pm.That was fine by me.

In fact I was more disappointed in the "ruling" yesterday. Those people are for some reason called "learned" or "honourable" but with that decision I think they are neither.Anyway, I keenly awaits the minority report, maybe I can see some redemption for that profession.

Update** Minority Report

When I was small, I believe in 'ghosts' and I was so scared whenever I was dark..After a certain age, it's quite difficult to believe anymore. The analogy could be the same for "Santa Claus".
Imagine, years down the line, you have a mob with burning torches, camped in in front your house because you stopped believing in Santa. You appealed to their sanity but you failed. You appealed to the most "learned" man in your village but you received no sympathy. They all say you have to continue believing in Santa. At least you have to carry a paper that say you believe in Santa, since they know what is in your heart.

I am not saying that God is equal to Santa Claus,no way. In fact I would say that I am fairly religious person, I prayed as often as needed,I am sure I'm honest in all my dealings, I don't take nor give bribes, I don't hang around politicians for scraps and I have never blown anybody to bits with C4 or otherwise..I conduct my life as Islamic as I can..I try to be an example at work, whenever I'm overseas etc, to show people how a muslim should be..

And I am convinced that being muslim is the right and correct path for me..

Back to issue at hand, how does being a muslim, gives me the right to force those who doesn't believe, to believe? Those who have lost their faith?

It doesn't. I can only guide, if they decide not to follow, so be it.

In fact, I should show them what a magnanimous muslim I am and what a strong faith I have in my own belief, that I am not worried should others abandon theirs. To force people the adhere to my faith, just exposes the fragility of my own confidence with my own faith.

That is the gap that our 'learned and honourable' fellow muslims failed to see.

Con Job

Just chanced upon yesterday's paper. I would not even call it 'news'paper since it's just full of crap and advertisements that masquerade as 'news'.

Tonik Hati that offers cure!!!.

The biggest gap here is not the 8o% of the article, which is true but the claimed effects of the said herbs. From treating viral hepatitis to fatty liver and cirrhosis. As if the gap is not enough, they have herb products that can treat HIV infection!! Voila, that's our claim to next year's Nobel Prize in Medicine. As if it's not enough, they have been approved by MOH for said claims and is publicised in a mainstream 'paper'!

I remember a relative of mine used to peddle noni extract tea, with the 'claimed' benefits of treating anything under the sun.The company received a letter from the Pharmaceutical Division, Ministery of Health, to desist or come up with evidence or be fined for false advertisement. Obviously the same division here is still celebrating the recent pay rise and forgot to check on this 21st century snake oil salesman.
Even if he wears a suit with silk tie, he's still a snake oil salesman.

More than paint job needed.

Utusan Malaysia quoted that Operating Rooms needed a new paint job to reduce infection.I think the gap here is the relationship between infection rate and the type of paint in Malaysian ORs.
I tend to believe there are other physical factors that needed to be addressed too like air circulation, humidity, temperature and the traffic flow.

You won't believe it that some ORs in our country actually uses split air-con units within the OR proper.Kind of putting paid to the laminar flow theory..Ah yes, these are ACCREDITED hospitals and it's more amazing when it happens within academic institutions.

I usually smirk when someone come up with a suggestion that we need to spend money in order to improve our services.
Invariably, it involved someone getting kick backs.Makes me feel like kicking their arses.

Hello World.

Hello,
Why today? I don't know.Maybe it's the date of birth of my son, 5 months ago. Maybe it's the itch of seeing others expressing their thoughts and I want to express mine too.Maybe it's the moronic going-ons within our socio-political sphere that pushed me.Maybe it's the constant vilifying of bloggers and maybe it's the silly emails that get forwarded ad infinitum.
Maybe it's all of above but mostly it's my perceived gap between what I consider the (possible) truth and the knowledge that I have, that bugs me.

It could be anything under the sun..It could be about a movie,TV series, news, blogs, politics or governance. While the gap within the rest are just a nuisance, an irritant maybe, the gap in the latter two has a more sinister and catastrophic outcome for my well being..

Maybe we all, collectively, can bring it just a bit closer, so that we can at least jump to a plausible conclusion or opinion.

Rightly or wrongly, at least it's our own.Or mine..
